Task 1: Shooting and Editing Using VFX Tools
Concept & Objective
This project aimed to create a visually engaging and VFX-enhanced video showcasing the product's sleek design and cutting-edge features. I aimed to make the video feel futuristic, professional, and cinematic using advanced visual effects.
I shot the footage using a Sony A7III mounted on a tripod for stability and precise framing. The entire VFX pipeline was executed in DaVinci Resolve, where I implemented motion tracking, relighting, compositing, text animations, and more.
VFX Techniques Used
1. Motion Tracking & UI Integration
One of the most crucial elements in this video was the motion tracking of the phone/product display to integrate digital UI overlays.
- Point and planar tracking were used to attach UI elements onto the product's screen, ensuring they moved perfectly with real-world motion.
- This effect created the illusion that the phone was actively displaying live data.
- Masking and feathering were applied to blend these digital overlays with the live footage seamlessly.
2. Relighting in DaVinci Resolve
During post-production, I implemented relighting techniques in DaVinci Resolve to enhance the visual depth and match the lighting with the scene's mood.
- Using the relight tool, I simulated a directional light source on the product, ensuring it blended well with the scene.
- The shadow intensity and highlights were adjusted to make the product feel more three-dimensional and realistic.
- Glow effects were applied subtly to give the product an extra premium and polished look.
3. 3D Camera Tracking & Depth Simulation
To add depth and realism, I used 3D camera tracking to introduce additional elements like:
- Depth-mapped text layers, giving a holographic, floating text effect.
- Simulated depth-of-field adjustments, making background elements blur naturally as the focus shifted.
- Parallax motion to make the foreground and background move dynamically.
4. Compositing & Background Enhancements
- Some background elements were replaced/enhanced to make the product stand out more clearly.
- Colour spill correction was applied to remove unwanted reflections and ensure uniform lighting.
- Subtle shadow compositing was used to ground the product more realistically.
5. Text & Graphical Element Animations
A significant component of the video was the use of animated text and graphic overlays:
- Typography animations were carefully timed to match the product's movements.
- HUD-style motion graphics were added, giving the video a futuristic aesthetic.
- Particle effects glows were subtly incorporated to enhance visual appeal.
6. Color Grading & Cinematic Tones
Colour grading played a pivotal role in achieving a high-end cinematic feel.
- Contrast enhancements and selective colour adjustments were applied to make the product colours pop.
- Cinematic LUTs were customized to balance the warmth and cool tones, ensuring a high-end commercial aesthetic.
- Localized colour correction helped isolate and enhance the product, drawing the viewer's attention.
7. High-Energy Transitions & Speed Effects
To maintain a fast-paced and engaging feel, I incorporated:
- Whip transitions speed ramping to sync the video rhythm with the soundtrack.
- Glitch distortion effects give a modern, tech-inspired look.
- Frame blending motion blur enhancements for smoother transitions.
Conclusion
This project was more than just a product showcase—an experiment blending real-world cinematography with digital enhancements. The combination of motion-tracked elements, relighting techniques, 3D compositing, and typography animation turned this into an engaging and visually dynamic VFX piece that aligns with professional advertising standards.
