Editing Details

- Software Used: The entire editing process was executed on DaVinci Resolve, chosen for its robust editing capabilities and advanced color grading tools.

- Equipment Used: Sony a7iv + Sigma 24-70mm F2.8

- Shot on Slog 2 for better dynamic range

 - Cuts and Transitions: The film features a mix of hard cuts and smooth transitions to maintain the dynamic flow typical of 1980s music videos and fashion shows.

 - Speed Adjustments: Certain clips were slowed down to emphasize key fashion pieces and movements, while others were sped up to add energy and contrast.

 - Overlay Effects: Retro effects such as VHS static, grain, and light leaks were added to enhance the authenticity of the 1980s vibe.

- Challenges: One significant challenge was balancing the retro effects without overwhelming the fashion pieces. This was addressed by carefully adjusting the intensity of each effect and ensuring that the focus remained on the clothing and models.


Color Grading

Achieving the retro look involved using DaVinci Resolve’s advanced color grading tools. The primary goal was to replicate the color palette of 1980s media, characterized by vibrant hues and high contrast.

  - Primary Color Wheels: Adjustments were made to the lift, gamma, and gain to achieve a more contrasty look.

  - Curves: The RGB curves were tweaked to enhance specific color tones prevalent in 1980s media.

  - Grain and Noise: A subtle grain was added to give the footage a more authentic, filmic texture.


Music and Sound Design

The music was carefully selected from Epidemic Sound, focusing on tracks that evoke the energetic and upbeat mood of the 1980s. Synth-pop and electronic genres were predominantly chosen to match the visual style.

The chosen tracks feature strong, catchy rhythms and synthesizer melodies, which were iconic elements of 1980s music. This not only enhances the retro vibe but also keeps the audience engaged and entertained.


Treatment and Vibe

The film's aesthetic is characterized by bold, vibrant colors, dynamic camera movements, and energetic performances by the models. The visual style draws inspiration from 1980s fashion magazines, music videos, and TV shows.

This fashion film project was a comprehensive exercise in capturing and recreating the essence of the 1980s. The use of DaVinci Resolve for editing and color grading, combined with carefully selected music from Epidemic Sound, resulted in a vibrant and engaging final product. The process provided valuable insights into the importance of cohesive visual and auditory elements in film production, enhancing my skills and understanding of retro aesthetics.
